white male Southern Baptist leader Richard Land apologizes again for racially charged comments about the Trayvon Martin case

Southern Baptist leader Richard Land has issued a lengthy public apology for his racially charged comments about the Trayvon Martin case, and said he has sent a personal letter to President Obama seeking forgiveness.

Land, who leads the Southern Baptist Convention‘s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, issued the two-page apology Wednesday, a week after a five-hour meeting with African-American leaders and other Southern Baptist officials.

Because of that meeting, "I have come to understand in sharper relief how damaging my words were," he wrote in the statement released through his denomination’s news service.

Land had previously apologized for his comments, which charged Democrats and civil rights leaders with exploiting the killing of the unarmed Florida teen. He also has apologized for failing to attribute the material he used when discussing the case on his radio show.

The latest apology included references to his "insensitivity" towards Martin’s family, and a clarification that "racial profiling is a heinous injustice" and that he does not believe U.S. racism is a myth.

Land also confessed that he "impugned the motives" of President Obama and civil rights leaders Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

"It was unchristian and unwise for me to have done so," he wrote, adding that he sent them letters of apology asking for forgiveness. "God alone is the searcher of men’s hearts. I cannot know what motivated them in their comments in this case."

An investigatory committee is looking into charges that some of Land’s comments may have been plagiarized. In a Wednesday statement, Steve Faith, chairman of the ERLC’s trustees, said ERLC leaders expect to make a public statement about the probe by June 1.

"The trustees are aware of their responsibility to the Convention and to the watching world," Faith said.

The meeting with Land included Fred Luter, the New Orleans pastor expected to be elected in June as the SBC’s first African-American president; leaders of black Southern Baptist groups and two former SBC presidents, Frank Page and Paige Patterson.

Ed Stetzer, a researcher for the Southern Baptist Convention who criticized Land’s comments, said he was grateful that black Southern Baptist leaders confronted Land, and wished more white leaders had spoken up.

"I am very glad that Dr. Land listened to them and apologized," Stetzer wrote Wednesday on his blog.

neo-nazi party on the rise in Greece

Rise of the far right: Dressed in black shirts and brandishing flares, these Golden Dawn supporters celebrate after they secured almost seven per cent of the vote

Rise of the far right: Dressed in black shirts and brandishing flares, these Golden Dawn supporters celebrate after they secured almost seven per cent of the vote

A neo-Nazi party who advocate forcing immigrants into work camps and planting landmines along the border are today savouring unprecedented political success in Greece.

Golden Dawn party will enter parliament with seven per cent of the vote after the electorate shunned the main parties who they blame for plunging the nation into austerity.

The obscure extreme-right group are one of the biggest winners in a poll which has plunged Greece into a fresh political crisis.

The party, who deny being neo-Nazis, have branded journalists ‘liars’ and warned all ‘traitors’ to run scared.

They adopt the Nazi salute and have a stylised swastika as their logo and have already made inroads into local government – in areas of Athens where there are large numbers of immigrants.

At the last general election they took just 0.23 per cent of the vote.

But the group has cultivated a benevolent image in some Athens’ neighbourhoods by dropping off food to needy families and escorting elderly residents to cash machines.

This time they easily passed the 3 per cent threshold to win their first seats in Parliament.

Flanked by burly, muscular men in tight black t-shirts, Golden Dawn leader Nikolaos Mihaloliakos marched down the street in Athens yelling ‘liars’ and ‘You must be ashamed for all your lies!’ at foreign journalists following him.

‘Greece is only the beginning,’ he shouted at them. When asked what that meant, he said: ‘You know very well’, wagging a finger at the television camera.

As they strode to the hotel, his supporters began chanting ‘Greece belongs to Greeks’ and ‘Foreigners get out of Greece’.

When asked what his first action in parliament would be, Mihaloliakos said: ‘All the illegal immigration out! Out of my country, out of my home!’

Asked how he planned to carry that out, he angrily said: ‘Use your imagination’.

As he entered the news conference, party members ordered assembled journalists to stand to attention.

‘I’ll say one thing: ‘Veni, Vidi, Vici‘,’ Mihaloliakos said from the podium, surrounded by his bodyguards sitting motionless with their arms crossed.

‘You defamed me, you shut my mouth – I won.’

It is the first time such an extreme right party has been in parliament since the fall of a military dictatorship in 1974.

‘We will continue our struggle for a free Greece, free from foreign loan sharks and a Greece that is independent and proud, without the slavery of the bailout,’ said Mihaloliakos, who was elected to the Athens city council in 2010.

He promptly gave the Nazi salute on his first appearance there.

‘We will struggle for a Greece that is not a social jungle because of the millions of immigrants they brought here without asking us,’ he said.

The group – which openly displays books on Aryan supremacy at its party offices – has been frequently linked to racist attacks, but denies beating up migrants.

‘This victory is devoted to all the brave boys with the black T-shirts and the white letters reading Golden Dawn,’ Mihaloliakos said. ‘Those who betrayed the motherland – you should be scared now.’

Swiss neo-nazi wanted for attempted murder is arrested after police identify him by his Hitler tattoos

Tattoo fan: Right-wing extremist Sebastien Nussbaumer was easily identified by his collection of Nazi inkings

Tattoo fan: Right-wing extremist Sebastien Nussbaumer was easily identified by his collection of Nazi inkings

A Swiss neo-Nazi wanted for attempted murder has been tracked down by German police, who identified him easily thanks to his litany of Nazi tattoos – including a huge picture of Hitler on his chest.

Sebastian Nussbaumer, 24, left his victim hospitalised after a shooting incident in Zurich last Saturday.

On Monday he travelled to Hamburg by train, but a police tip-off meant that 40 officers with machine guns were waiting at the station to arrest the fugitive, who was reportedly armed with a pistol.

Nussbaumer’s Nazi tattoos include a symbol on his forearm representing Hitler’s paramilitary force, the Stormtroopers, which it is illegal to display in Germany.

Also among his inkings are a swastika next to the image of Hitler’s face, a hand grenade on his neck, and a spider’s web symbolic of an SS division.

As well as the attempted murder charges in Switzerland, the neo-Nazi may face jail in Germany if it is judged that his tattoos illegally glorified the crimes of the Third Reich.

The present allegations against him are not Nussbaumer’s first brush with the law, according to The Local, an English-language German news site.

He was jailed in 2006 after attacking a group of Albanians with a knuckleduster while being filmed by another far-right extremist.

In 2007 he earned 16 months for assaults which included breaking the noses of two men – one with a kick, the other with a head-butt – and beating a drunk man so seriously that he got concussion.

Nussbaumer appealed a further sentence of three years and three months which he received in January 2012 for various offences, arguing that he had been sentenced more harshly because of his personal beliefs.

His latest victim remains in hospital, and the shooting is expected to net Nussbaumer an attempted murder charge.

Swiss Nazi hunter Heinz Kaiser said: ‘The last time he was jailed it was for 44 different offences for which he got 39 months. Then he was released. But he is a ticking timebomb – he will commit violence again. He is very prominent in the far right scene where he gets the recognition that he doesn’t get anywhere else. He’s one of their key players.’

The Hamburg far-right group the White Wolves is regarded as one of the most violent of the neo-Nazi groups in Germany, and has been blamed for attacks on foreigners and the police.

psychoanalyst insults black woman in Brasilia; says she should be in Africa taking care of orangutans

Police have identified the psychiatrist that insulted a black woman in a movie theater in Brasília

The verbal assault occurred when the cinema ticket vender tried to stop the doctor from taking cuts in the ticket line. He is a repeat offender and will be charged with defamatory libel.

The Civil Police are investigating a denouncement of racial discrimination in a shopping center in the Asa Norte area of Brasília, the nation’s capital. They have already identified the physician who offended a black employee in a movie theater. On Wednesday (2), the police summoned the man to give testimony and to charge him for discriminatory libel.

Marina Serafim dos Reis speaks to SBT reporter

The man was not immediately identified after officials took testimonies from witnesses. Later, authorities reviewed images taken from the shopping center’s surveillance camera which show the psychoanalyst Heverton Otacílio de Campos Menezes running from the scene. He fled after witnesses on the scene called him racist and signaled to security to arrest him. Security pursued him but Menezes managed to get away in his car.

Heverton Otacílio de Campos Menezes: accused of insulting black movie clerk

It all began when the man caused confusion after having arrived late to the theater and wanting to buy tickets to see the film Habemus Papam. The insults began when the clerk told him that he would have to wait. The clerk, Marina Seraphim dos Reis, was offended when she tried to prevent the doctor taking cuts in the ticket line. “He said I was very rude and that it for this reason that I had this color. That I was in the wrong place, that there was not my place and that I shouldn’t be dealing with people, that I should be dealing with animals. He also said I should not be living here; I should be living in Africa taking care of orangutans,” Marina said.

Marina Serafim dos Reis details her experience to Bandeirantes TV

Marina filed a complaint and identified the perpetrator. She says she had never experienced such humiliation: “At the time I was very nervous and even cried. I got very upset and felt what he said. I felt like trash.”

Heverton, who is an endocrinologist and serves as a psychoanalyst, is a repeat offender. There was previously a complaint of aggression made against him by another black woman, who worked as poll clerk during the 2002 elections. According to the woman, after a discussion, also because of the line, Heverton said that she represented a banana republic and called her “neguinha”, or little blackie.

Police chief Ainton Rodrigues de Oliveira

After the movie clerk identified him, police chief Ainton Rodrigues de Oliveira said that the doctor should now be charged with defamatory libel. “Racism is every act of segregation: a school that only accepts the enrollment of white children, for example. Discriminatory injury is a felony because the sentence equates to an involuntary manslaughter, which also provides a penalty of three years imprisonment.”
