On Self-Defense & Women of Color…

From US Prison Culture

I have not written about the Marissa Alexander case on this blog though I have been closely following the developments in her trial. Well on Friday, Ms. Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

For those who are unfamiliar with the case, here is a very brief summary. Marissa Alexander is an African-American mother of 3 who tried to protect herself from an abusive husband by firing a warning shot into the ceiling after he had beat her up again. There is of course much more to the case including the fact that her attorney tried to use the infamous “Stand Your Ground” law as her defense and was prohibited from doing so by the judge in the case. You can read much more about the case here.

This is another example of the system re-victimizing survivors of violence and speaks to what I wrote about on Monday with respect to the inadequacy of the efforts to actually support survivors of rape and domestic violence. This case brings to mind countless other stories of battered women and rape survivors who I have known over the years. But there is also something more… Read more »

Maya Angelou Opens Women’s Health And Wellness Center, Calls Non-White Disparities ‘Embarrassing’

Maya Angelo

Wisdom comes with age, and at 84 years old, Maya Angelou has lots of wisdom. But she says she picked up her most valuable piece of wisdom early on. “I learned a long time ago the wisest thing I can do is be on my own side, be an advocate for myself and others like me,” she said. In that spirit, Angelou has taken up the cause of women’s health.

“If I do that well enough, then I’ll be able to look after someone else — the children or the husband or the elderly. But I have to look after myself first,” she says. “I know that some people think that’s being selfish, I think that’s being self-full.”

That philosophy is at the center of her latest effort, a partnership with Novant Health, a not-for-profit integrated system of 13 hospitals that is set to unveil the Maya Angelou Center for Women’s Health and Wellness in her hometown of Winston-Salem, N.C.

The newest facility is the second with which Angelou has been involved. In 2002 she helped open the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity at Wake Forest University, which is focused on closing the gap in health and healthcare disparities among minorities.

Like the work being done there, Angelou says her women’s health center — which offers an array of clinical programs affecting women’s health, including heart, wellness, cancer and surgical services, as well as maternity, emergency, bone and joint health and behavioral care — will focus not only on treatment but on prevention, a critical step in closing the gap that she says is too often hindered by denial.

“The disparities are embarrassing,” she says. “What they hope to do at the center is to coordinate all the aspects of women’s health and wellness … encouraging women to look after themselves. In that way, they can almost be sure to count on some prevention.”

Last year, the CDC released its first periodic report addressing health disparities and inequalities in the U.S., which they say highlights the considerable and persistent gaps between the healthiest and the least healthy people in the country. Their research revealed striking differences in the uninsured rates for Hispanics and non-Hispanic blacks; research also indicates that black women have the highest rate of death from coronary heart disease of any group, and an infant mortality rate 2.4 times higher than that of non-Hispanic whites.

At the forefront of the center’s prevention challenge is breast cancer screening and increasing women’s awareness about their risk for heart disease. As for the AIDS epidemic and the particular crisis it represents for women of color, Angelou says prevention is even more critical but warns that it extends well beyond the confines of any one facility.

“The time has passed when a women can act like everybody is as innocent as she is. So you don’t have to ask a man to use protection. That’s ridiculous. It’s [about] being aware,” she says. “That’s the biggest gift I can give anybody: ‘Wake up, be aware of who you are, what you’re doing and what you can do to prevent yourself from becoming ill.’”

To mark its opening, the Maya Angelou Center for Women’s Health and Wellness is kicking off a national competition titled “Health Inspirations,” which encourages women to share how they have been inspired to practice a new health behavior, change a negative health behavior or improve their overall health and well-being.

white male fire capt. demoted for racist rant on Facebook

(Source: Miami-Dade Fire Rescue) Capt. Brian Beckmann

“I and my coworkers could rewrite the book on whether our urban youths are victims of racist profiling or products of their failed, *expletive*, ignorant, pathetic, welfare dependent excuses for parents”

A Miami-Dade fire captain under fire for his controversial Facebook comments in the Trayvon Martin case has been demoted. Captain Brian Beckmann fell from the top of the command in his firehouse to the lowest rank of firefighter.
“The comments made by Captain Beckmann were reprehensible and will not be tolerated,” said Miami Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, a former fire chief, after word of the discipline was made public. “We can’t have our employees, especially a supervisor, making such disparaging comments about any member of our community, much less one of our own employees.”

In addition to the loss of rank, the 17-year-fire department veteran’s paycheck will take a major hit because a firefighter’s salary is dramatically less than a fire captain. The amount is still unclear but CBS4 found Beckman made $125,616 as a Captain during a 2007 investigation done on firefighter salaries.

Before returning to work Beckmann will have to undergo a psychological examination by a county doctor and be required to take diversity training courses.

Beckmann, with the help of the firefighter union, is expected to appeal the demotion.

“Today the Fire Chief demoted Brian Beckmann by two supervisory ranks back to the rank of Firefighter. As union President, I believe this discipline is excessive,” said Rowan Taylor in a statement. “We will immediately file an appeal to an independent arbitrator. We anticipate that the case will be heard within the next few months. The decision of the independent arbitrator will be final and binding.”

Under county union contracts, that appeal will go to an arbitrator who may uphold, reverse, or offer up a new discipline order. The process of appeal could take up to six months. In the meantime Beckmann will have to work as a firefighter.

The disciplinary action against Beckmann stems from racially charged comments made on his personal Facebook page.

The Facebook post that started the firestorm of controversy claimed, “I and my coworkers could rewrite the book on whether our urban youths are victims of racist profiling or products of their failed, *expletive*, ignorant, pathetic, welfare dependent excuses for parents,” in cases like the shooting death of unarmed Miami teen Trayvon Martin.

Beckmann denied writing the Facebook message when interviewed by the Human Resources department. Instead, Beckmann said he copy and pasted the message from another website.

“I was reading things that evoked s response in me that made me want to share it,” Beckmann told an interviewer. These “were not my words.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue had launched an investigation into whether any county policies were violated by the posting, which critics said was racist.

In the county’s 11-page social media policy, there is just one paragraph regarding personal opinions that reads “do it on your own time, make clear that you are speaking from your own point of view.”

Beckmann has defended the post. He told CBS4 News partner the Miami Herald that he was a ‘private citizen and has the same right to freely express an opinion on any subject that anyone else does’.

Beckmann made the Facebook post on the same day State Attorney Angela Corey announced that Sanford neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman was being charged with second-degree murder in the Trayvon Martin shooting. Martin, a Miami Gardens teen, was unarmed. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self-defense.

However, Mayor Gimenez believes the county needs to take strong action now to look at social media policy.

“In order to avoid this from happening in the future, I have directed my staff to revise the appropriate policies dealing with this issue. It is important to reiterate my position that public servants have a responsibility to uphold the highest levels of integrity and decency, especially when you consider our multicultural, multi-ethnic community. There’s no such thing as being off-the-clock; we are public servants 24/7 and must conduct ourselves with the utmost professionalism at all times.”

Pepsi: Gay, White King. Black Devil.

The Penn State football program didn’t cancel a game in response to the scandal surrounding former coach and suspected Pedophile Jerry Sandusky. Umpteen allegations of anally raped and molested children – black children - didn’t interrupt the ball game. Sans Joe Patterno, the Nittany Lions played on. If Happy Valley didn’t pause the gridiron action, we certainly weren’t going to be denied our potato chip and booze-infested jamborees for Super Bowl XLVI. Miss out on White men grappling for a big brown ball? Not for all the sodomized children in the universe.

Even if you’re not a football fan, the game offers so much more. The military branch of White Supremacy makes an obligatory appearance to christen the contest. Halftime performances where White men grope black females. Victory celebrations where black males propose to teary-eyed White women. All that AND… commercials!

Not just any commercials. Never seen before, million dollar advertisements concocted to arouse a global live audience exceeding 20 million people. These promos have increasingly become more integral to the festivities; some spectators tune in just for the ads.

So what did the 2012 Super Bowl offer? An Asian female with poor English. An obese black female pedaling ice cream cones. A “gay” White King and Flavor Flav

Didn’t hear a peep from GLAAD on this one.

Racist Woman and Racist Man orchestrate a blitzkrieg of ideas, images and sounds supporting a unifying ultimate objective. Unending White Domination. If one is less confused about White Supremacy/Racism and able to see what one is looking at, this sixty second cola blurb is an unsettling reminder that White people are at War against all black and non-white people people. Failure to understand this is akin to being unable to tell time. You’ll be a habitual time-waster, perpetually late, and continuously in trouble with White people.

What can a Racist do with sixty seconds and your undivided attention…

Remind White people that the War of White Supremacy is ongoing. The Pepsi add begins with the checkerboard floor. This color pattern is a classic Racist mnemonic. White people remind other White people to appreciate and participate in terrorizing black and non-white people. As in chess, the White army should be working together to destroy the dark people, and White people should be the aggressors – striking first.

The “Gay Rights” Klan of the White Supremacist army has been on their hustle. They successfully obstructed the career of Roland Martin – black male, and waited for the day of Whitney Houston’s burial to declare that she was an in the closet “homosexual”. It’s fitting that the White man with the crown is an admitted “homosexual”/Anti-Sexual. As Dr. Nell Irvin Painter illustrates, so called homosexuality and pedophilia are a consistent component of The History of White People. White people have made ever increasing efforts to normalize their habits – to get large numbers of melanated people to embrace and engage this misbehavior. Presenting the world with Elton John in high heels and a crown is a potent, subtle way of encouraging incorrect thought, speech and action relating to sexual activity.

The Racially Ambiguous Person - meaning an individual whose racial classification is not clearly understood by a significant number of non-whites. Racists are promoting increased amounts of sexual intercourse between White people and non-white people. The product? President Obama. Halle Berry. Mass confusion. As Racist Man and Racist Woman decide whom is and whom is not White, the only folk who get confused are non-white people. Whites advocate and advance a handful of Racially Ambiguous individuals, to deceitfully proclaim that White Supremacy/Racism has concluded. Too often, Victims of Racism focus their frustrations on the non-white person being showcased – which is the effect Racists wanted. Victims of Racism in conflict with other Victims. The problem is not Melanie Amaro. The problem is White people.

Black people in the dungeon. A masterful Racist campaign couldn’t terminate without caging the darkest hue-mans on the planet. Hoards of people ingest the dark beverage, and the gay king is disposed; tossed into the bowels of the castle with the a nigger jester. This is what I expect from White people. The most vile representation of black people possible. Project exceptionally toxic, anti-black content to tens of millions. A highly melanated black male in greater confinement; cracking jokes behind bars. Racists went all out with this endeavor. Flavor Flav has worn an over-sized clock for the duration of his entertainment career/victimization. I can only conclude that White Terrorists made sure he had the gaudiest time piece possible, just so long as it was upside down. White people invest millions to tell the entire planet that: black people are primitive, devilish buffoons, antiquated farm equipment ill-equipped for the 21st century. At best they can provide childish entertainment; otherwise, they require extreme confinement, restricted access to other people and things.

Reflecting on White people’s history of rape, bondage and sex games, Gus suspects that there could have been a sexual implication with placing a gay White man in confinement with a black male. But perhaps the Jerry Sandusky coverage corrupted Gus’ thinking.

This is one of more then seventy commercials from Super Bowl Sunday. There were an assortment of gadgets and services being hawked, but one idea remained constant. White domination of non-white people forever. Even in a post-apocalyptic world, Whites intend on dominating and confusing dark people.

PS White people have a history of hopping out of the closet for the big game.

18-Year-Old Alan Blueford, black male, executed by Oakland cops

A Skyline High School senior is dead after Oakland police profiled and opened fire on him.

The summary execution of 18-year-old Alan Dwayne Blueford happened near 90th Avenue and Birch Street in Oakland early Sunday morning. Mr. Blueford and two friends were standing outside waiting for some young lady friends to come pick them up. According to Oakland police, two of their cops “believed one of them were carrying a hidden gun.” It is unclear how this was determined based on their looks, nor is it clear why that would matter in a country which prides itself on gun ownership rights.

Police say the young men ran (obviously fearing for their lives in the face of paid, constitutionally-protected killers) when they approached them. One of the cops, whose names are being protected by the city of Oakland, ran after Mr. Blueford for two blocks before recklessly firing a gun at the young man, killing him instantly. The cop struck Mr. Blueford three times and shot himself in the foot once. Of course, the killer was rewarded with a paid vacation (aka “paid administrative leave”), despite the long-standing U.S. Supreme Court decision in Tennessee v. Garner, 471 U.S. 1 (1985), which specifically outlaws police shooting at fleeing suspects without probable cause.

Watch a report about the execution by ABC-7 in San Francisco.

Following standard protocol, state-run media outlets have reported extensively about a so-called “criminal record” of Mr. Blueford, which is their way of justifying and encouraging summary executions by police. An attorney for Oakland Police, Harry Stern, said the summary execution was “100 percent” justified and in line with police policy. Though there is no way of knowing the truth regarding this execution, if what police say is true, Mr. Blueford should have used the alleged firearm to protect himself from the state organization members who know the policy of paid vacations when they murder Americans. The entire situation should have and could have been avoided had the cops not profiled these young men by approaching them for absolutely no reason except for harassment.

The family of Mr. Blueford has hired an attorney for a possible civil suit, however the killer will not be charged and should be back on the streets after his foot heals from the self-inflicted, reckless gunshot wound. Mr. Blueford was scheduled to graduate in June.
