Nearly 20 students at Jack Robey Junior High School in Pine Bluff, Ark. were injured last Thursday when a police officer used pepper spray to clear them from a hallway.

This week, police are meeting with school officials to determine what action to take against the officer who sprayed the students, the Associated Press reports.

Student Faith Forney told KLRT-TV in Little Rock that she and her classmates were left gagging and vomiting in the hall after the officer used the spray to move them into classrooms.

"Not knowing he was going to spray it I walked straight into it," Forney told the station. "Everybody started hollering and we had people just gagging and throwing up and everything and I’m like what’s going on? You could have at least said something about keep it moving. But spraying mace? He took it too far with that."

Forney was rushed to the emergency room along with two of her classmates. Meanwhile, 17 other students were picked up by parents after they experienced difficulty breathing, according to the Pine Bluff Commercial.

Carolyn Brown, the mother of a 13-year-old student at the school, told the paper that she was called in to pick up her daughter and heard conflicting reports about the incident.

"They told me the police officer sprayed Mace in the air because the kids were moving too slow," Brown said. "I’ve heard so many stories, including that there was a fight but there was no fight because if there had been, they would have taken kids to jail."

Pine Bluff police spokesman Lt. Bob Rawlinson told The Associated Press that they are investigating the situation within the police department and will not be issuing a press release about the incident.

The consequences of immigration, both legal and illegal, has become a serious issue in many countries and worthy of discussion. But somehow, in this case, anti-immigration sentiment arising from Israeli racism cannot be mentioned lest it somehow tarnish the legitimacy of the Jewish state.

Scott McConnell has observed the European and alternative media coverage of Wednesday’s race riots in Israel directed against African immigrants and wondered if the press in the US is reporting what took place. Well, the short answer is “no.” The New York Times and the Washington Post have avoided the subject as has NPR and the Los Angeles Times.

Using Google and also going to individual media websites, I could not find any reference to the riots in any mainstream publication nor on any news television channel. The best coverage in the English language media was in Britain’s The Guardian, which described how African immigrants and asylum seekers were attacked by an angry crowd in Tel Aviv, leading to a number of injuries, widespread vandalism, and seventeen arrests. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu helped trigger the confrontation last Sunday when he described “illegal infiltrators” who were “flooding the country” and threatening both Israel’s security and its identity as a Jewish state. The actual violence on the streets may have been sparked by an Israeli parliamentarian telling the crowd that the Africans were a “cancer in our body.” The Israeli newspaper Maariv called what followed an “unbridled rampage.”

English language newspapers in Israel, including Haaretz, did cover the story, which was also picked up by Jewish media in the US. A number of American Jewish organizations expressed their disapproval of the violence while also noting the legitimate concerns over rising crime and lawlessness. Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League expressed his concern at the “lawlessness and violence committed by and directed against the immigrants” and then three times more noted that the lawless and violent immigrants were creating security problems for Israelis. He also praised Netanyahu’s “condemnation of the inflammatory comments and the violence…,” not mentioning that it was Netanyahu who had initially given support to the protesters.

Steve Sailer has noted that Foxman is a lot tougher on immigrants in Israel than he is on their counterparts in the US. In May 2010 he referred to Arizona’s illegal immigrant legislation as an example of “nativism” and “bigotry,” manifestly “mean spirited” and xenophobic.

The media underreporting of any unpleasant news coming out of Israel is a long standing American journalistic tradition. Friends of Israel would and frequently do argue that Israel is being held to a higher standard than any of its neighbors and is subject to unfair criticism. But the problem is not that Israel is held to a higher standard than its neighbors. The reality is that it is all too often not held to any standard at all by most of the US media and congress. Sondance the Clown, who offered his services for children’s parties and claimed to be a child development expert, was busted by Arkansas police for downloading child pornography.

A 47-year-old professional clown was found with a large cache of child pornography on computer equipment in his Arkansas home, police said.

Thomas Harold Morgan – who goes by “Sondance the Clown” – was arrested Wednesday after cops noticed someone downloading child pornography over a file-sharing network. They allegedly traced it to an Internet service provider belonging to the suspect.

Police said they then obtained a search warrant for Morgan’s home.

“There was enough material on there that it would take (investigators) at least two or three weeks to go through all of it — so there’s a lot of images,” Fort Smith, Ark., Police Cpl. Steven Dooly told 5NEWS.

Morgan wasn’t dressed as a clown when he was arrested, Dooly added.

Police charged Morgan with distributing, possessing, or viewing child porn, and he was being held without bond, 5NEWS reported.

On his “Sondance the Clown” website, Morgan wears oversized shoes, white makeup and an orange wig.

He writes that he has spent 20 years “perfecting my craft.”

“My educational background is in childhood development, so I know how to interact with kids (and I’m pretty good with adults, too),” he also wrote.

He offers his services at parties and restaurants.

Beverly Engle, executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Benton County, told 5NEWS that people who like viewing child porn would also be attracted to events involving kids.

“Those individuals seek out to be [in those situations] because there’s children,” Engle said.

She added that parents should be mindful, even around people who claim to be child experts.
