“Like every black parent in Britain, I’ve had to have “the talk” with my kids when they reach a certain age. Not the one about the birds and the bees, but the one where you prepare them for stop and search. You advise them what to do if it happens and you give them tips on what to do to avoid it. Don’t run in the street because you may look suspicious. People may think that you are fleeing the scene of a crime. Don’t hang around in the streets. Our young men are labelled as troublemakers, lazy and no good.”

A few weeks ago my younger brother who is 14 and tall as hell went shopping with my mother who is disabled. As he was helping her put things in the car and went back to go and find her he was grabbed by some security guard from across the road and was accused of shoplifting in a shop that he and my mum never even entered.

The guy was grabbing my brother up and my mum went off on the guy pushing him away from my brother causing a scene the guy said he stole gum my brother don’t even like gum and why would he steal something while out with his mum. My mum told me she damn near punch the security guard in the face and beat him with her crutches.

My brother is dyslexic and quite sheltered my mum hates when he and my other younger brother are coming home late from school because something like that could happen while she or me or any of my sisters are not there.

It happened a year ago too when my two brothers and my older sister went to Tesco as soon as he set foot inside the security guard grabbed him by the arm me and my sister were screaming at him. Because he is tall and Black saying he looks like he could be in a gang the only gang my brothers are in is the Kingdom hearts fanclub in their schools.

After the London riots my mum did not allow my brothers outside the house sending them to the corner shop to pick up bread was out of the question.

  1. I wish my family gave me “the talk” when I was little. I might’ve turned out a totally different person growing instead of being so damn naive.
