Worst re-cast in the history of ever: Aunt Viv (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) Did they think we wouldn’t notice, though? Seriously.
do they know how fucking confused I was being 4 trying figure this shit out.
At first I thought Uncle Phil divorced Aunt Viv and married a woman with the same name.
Then I thought pregnancy made you lighter.
that fucked me up
my mom stopped watching fresh prince because of this. she was upset at the casting and said “they replaced a beautiful talented dark skinned woman with something bland”
my light skinned mother was not impressed
This still bothers me.
Janet Hubert shouldn’t have gotten herself fired then! Will Smith and Alfonso Ribero have both said it was her own fault.
she was fired for hating on will not for being dark skinned
Just being a dark-skinned black female can be considered causing “beef”. Her very existence inspiring unparallelled scorn and resentment. This disdain seems heightened if she is not silent in response to her mistreatment. Given the track record of black people in relation to colorism (a product of Racism/White Supremacy), you’ll have to excuse me if I maintain a sizeable amount of skepticism on what her black male co-workers stated was the reason for her being fired.
A similar recasting happened on another black sitcom starring Damon Wayons. The curious casting choices of two non-white females who in real life have a white parent on The Cosby Show. So it’s okay for Cosby’s “son” to be very dark-skinned but none of his “daughters”? Not to mention the recent casting choices of real-life black female icons such as Harriet Tubman and Nina Simone. Or the almost complete absence of black females in over-hyped biopics like Red Tails (in real life black females served overseas alongside these black males and were partnered with them as well).
It’s important to notice patterns under the system of Racism (White Supremacy); a system based on the mistreatment of non-white people on the basis of color or factors related to color. Braintrashed from birth, non-white people often join in on the mistreatment of each other. Only an honest assessment of this tendency can help us undermine the “programming” and ultimately, the system itself. For me, the drastic change on this particular series is what we can come to expect under a system of Racism (White Supremacy). Even at a confused state, I stopped watching it around this time as well. I am also not surprised at some black people’s insistence that it was her fault. That, too, is something I’ve come to expect. The black female’s pain and mistreatment is largely invisible.
