Episode Notes: The Context of White Supremacy hosts the sixteenth and final installment on Isabel Wilkerson‘s New York Times Top 10 Best Book of the Year, The Warmth Of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration (2010). Wilkerson’s historic volume earned her a spot on President Obama’s 2011 summer reading list. One of the most important passages of the text thus far: “The [White] mob became a single organism descending on the trolley. The trolley operator moved fast. He went back the other way, George said. That’s the only thing that saved us. And that’s when I began to realize the seriousness of this thing.” The book concludes on a somber note as our three protagonists transition from the physical realm. We’ll hear Ms. Wilkerson’s concluding remarks about the 20th century migration – and the 21st century return south for many black people. We’ll share our final thoughts on this colossal volume and what it reveals about the System of Racism. Gus wants to hear listeners’ thoughts on what makes this book so popular with Whites.
