A Lakewood waitress said when she saw a 47-year-old man holding hands with a teenager across a café table, she became suspicious and called police.
The call led to the arrest of Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier Glen Winans, who has been charged with child rape in the second degree a 13-year-old girl admitted having sex with him, according to prosecutors.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Winans began an online relationship with a teenager identified only as A.V. while he was deployed in Afghanistan. The affidavit states Winans met the girl on meetme.com, a site that advertises itself as a place for young people to meet and chat online.
According to the charges Winans continued the relationship with A.V. after his return from Afghanistan. He is accused of having sex with A.V. at her home in Kelso and his home in Lakewood.
Winans was also spotted having dinner with the teenager at Kimberly’s Café in Lakewood on October 26th. Waitress Kellie Attinello said his behavior caught her eye. “When I came to the table to bring them their food, they were holding hands, romantically,” said Attinello. “That’s when I got really upset.”
Attinello said Winans had been a frequent customer at the café before and after his deployment, and spoke openly about his attraction to young women. “He told me he liked dating young girls, 19 or 20. I mean never did he say he liked them really young,” Attinello said.
Winans had been seen at the café with younger women in the past, according to Attinello, but she said none appeared to be underage. She also said Winans’ behavior often left staff members suspicious and uncomfortable. “He always kind of creeped us out; I mean none of us cared much for him,” she said.
Winans pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree child rape on Monday. His bail was set at $100,000.
