OTTAWA COUNTY, MI — Police are investigating what appeared to be someone’s attempt to scrawl a racial slur on a Jenison home’s siding several days ago.
A family in a Meadowbrook Drive home, near Cottonwood Drive and Bauer Road, on Sunday found the word written in ash from a fire pit.
The word found was “niger,” but police think the vandal or vandals misspelled what they intended to write. It was written in smaller letters on one piece of horizontal siding.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Bennett said investigators think that teens could be behind the scrawled word.
“It’s probably somebody with a very misguided idea of being funny,” he said. “But we don’t think it’s funny. We take this very seriously.”
The discovery was reported Nov. 10.
Bennett said police have been investigating whether individuals at a Saturday night sleepover in the same area might have played a role in the incident.
Police said a couple with teens live at the targeted home and investigators also are looking at whether any students at their school may be responsible.
“We’ve been doing some work with the school resource deputy,” Bennett said. “But there doesn’t appear to be any suspects coming to the forefront.”
