Man arrested for ‘placing bomb beneath ex-wife’s car as she shopped with their two small children’
A man was arrested for trying to kill his ex-wife and two small children by placing a bomb underneath the family’s car in Redlands Town Center in California on Monday.
The explosive, planted beneath her car parked near the JC Penny, would have killed people in the car and in the surrounding area had it not been detonated.
Hundreds of shoppers were evacuated at 1 p.m. as a bomb squad used a robot device to remove the bomb, reported ABC News.
Steven James Sunny, 28, was arrested for attempted murder after an explosive device was located underneath his ex-wife’s car in a Redlands shopping center
Steven Sunny, a 28-year-old Victorville man, was arrested at his girlfriends residence at a San Bernardino trailer park Monday night.
He was arrested on three counts of attempted murder: one count for his ex wife, and two counts for his two young children.
Sunny’s ex-wife and children were shopping at Redland’s Town Center when he planted a pipe bomb beneath her car in the parking lot next to J.C Penny
Police were called after a woman called 9-1-1 at 1 p.m. after noticing a questionable object in a vehicle, reported Redlands Daily Facts.
Police roped off the suspicious area and shoppers and employees from seven businesses were left waiting for hours until they could return to their cars.
Finally, the bomb went off sending a loud boom. The San Bernardindo County Bomb Squad surveyed the area to make sure there were no other surreptitiously placed bombs.
‘We want to make sure you’re not leaving with anything else that is a concern,’ he said to numbers of impatient families trying to return to their vehicles. They were able to return at around 5 p.m.
The Bomb Squad identified the device as a pipe bomb and police believe that Sunny was targeting his ex-wife after a domestic dispute.
A pipe bomb is a pipe filled with explosive materials and sealed off. It is easy to create at home at a low cost and can create a significant amount of damage.
Sunny is being held at San Bernardino County Jail on $1 million bail.
