A woman was pronounced dead in police custody at Houston’s Southeast Jail on Sunday, just eight days after a man showing signs of mental distress died after being restrained by officers at a convenience store.

Two people have died in Houston Police custody in just eight days amid the controversy surrounding the death of Sandra Bland in jail just outside the city.

Police confirmed a 29-year-old woman died while in the custody of Houston Police Department on Sunday.

The death comes just eight days after a man who was ‘showing signs of mental distress’ also died in custody in the Texas city.

Both come amid controversy over the suicide of Sandra Bland, found hanging in her cell at Waller County Jail, just outside Houston, on July 13.

Sandra Bland’s autopsy concludes death by hanging

Police say the 29-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, was arrested for public intoxication, reports ABC News.

She was checked at the scene by paramedics and taken to Southeast Jail but was ‘unresponsive’ on arrival, before she could even be booked in.

Paramedics administered CPR and took her to Ben Taub General Hospital but she was later pronounced dead.
