LEE COUNTY, FL – For the third time this semester, Florida Gulf Coast University students are seeing racially charged messages on campus.
“Now, I’m seeing that this is a problem – a really big problem,” said FGCU student Taylor Broad.
This time students say they saw a flyer hanging up on a light post near the library. The flyer said “White Guilt Free Yourself From Cultural Marxism.”
It linked to a website that promotes a radical right white power organization.
One student said she’s going to start carrying pepper spray around campus.
“That’s really terrible because you shouldn’t have people afraid to be on campus,” said FGCU freshman Joshua Porter.
This comes just weeks after two different messages were found on campus white boards.
“The fact that I’m getting used to it says a lot about it, you know. No one should have to get used to it. It shouldn’t be a daily, or weekly, or even a monthly occurrence,” said FGCU student Christina Jones.
“The University Police Department, Title IX Office or Office of Student Affairs have not received any reports from students or anyone else about this type of flyer,” said FGCU Vice President Susan Evans.
FGCU Senior Andre Williams said enough is enough. He wants to see the university take action and find who posted the flyer.
“There’s a pretty big population of minority students here and around the area and having this happen one more time could possibly make the protests that happened weeks ago a little bit bigger,” said FGCU senior Andrew Williams.
Similar flyers were found at other college campuses nationwide.
