The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Washington, D. C. Councilmember Yvette M. Alexander. Councilmember Alexander has been a member of the Council of the District of Columbia since 2007. She chaired the Committee on Aging and Community Affairs from 2009 through 2010 and the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs from 2011 through 2012. Presently, she serves as Chair of the Committee on Health and is responsible for oversight of Department of Health, Department of Health Care Finance, Department of Behavioral Health, Health Professions and Boards and Licensing. The momentum to legalize and/or decriminalize cannabis has hit the nation’s capitol. During a recent DC Council vote, Ms. Alexander was the lone opponent to relaxing punitive cannabis laws. She suggested that decriminalization “will increase more attraction to this area for the sale of drugs. Because the purchase of drugs has little to no repercussion.” We’ll see what evidence she has to support this claim, and we’ll get her response to critics who claim she is misinformed and perpetuating laws that adversely impact black DC citizens.

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We’ll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We’ll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog.

Black History Month 2014 got rolling with a bevy of Racist jokes about fried chicken and slavery (tacky). February also marked the beginning of the Jordan Davis murder trial in Florida; Angela Corey is one member of the prosecution whom should be familiar to all who’ve followed the Trayvon Martin and Marissa Alexander cases. While black children are gunned down for candy and music, White drug addicts and alleged pedophiles were defended and celebrated. Phillip Seymour Hoffman died from from apparent heroine overdose. He hasn’t been mocked and jeered like the late Whitney Houston; to the contrary, he’s now a VICTIM of the war on drugs. Woody Allen hasn’t received the bashing the Michael Jackson faced. He married his non-white step-daughter and is accused of molesting another child, yet many White people won’t tolerate his reputation being besmirched. Maybe these are just additional instances of affluenza.

The sole purpose of the 2014 holiday commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was seemingly to permit additional time for conversation on Seattle Seahawks’ cornerback Richard “General” Sherman. A group of black scholars at the University of Michigan used the day to address ongoing racism on their campus (#BBUM); simultaneously, a group of White students at Arizona State University took time to mock black people. Racist Suspect and pop sensation Justin Bieber was arrested for drag racing while under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, and prescription medication; thus far Bieber, has not been branded a thug, ghetto or a nigger. Justin Simien’s new film, Dear White People, jostled Sundance Film Festival audiences. And Madiba (Nelson Mandela) has barely been laid to rest, and tens of thousands of black miners are on strike from South Africa’s Lonmin corporation – pittance wages are hard to reconcile. 70 years later, the execution of 14-year-old George Stinney also remains unreconciled.
