non-white children were the target of racist sign posted in their yard

Denise Schenck found this sign Saturday morning outside her home on Thomas Lane in Childersburg, AL

A family is upset after they say a racist sign was put in their front yard to scare their biracial children. Denise Schenck found the sign Saturday morning outside her home on Thomas Lane in Childersburg.

“Oh I was devastated,” said Schenck, “It was such a racial thing. I was devastated. I had never seen anything like it. I didn’t even know what it meant.”

The sign had derogatory comments like “the brotherhood lives” and “do yourself a favor and go back to Africa.”

Schenck believes the sign was targeting her daughter, Christy Brackett, and Brackett’s bi-racial children. When Brackett saw the sign, she immediately called police.

Police arrested James “Frank” Trucks who lives two doors down from Schenck. He’s charged with harassment and menacing, but says he did not do it.

“I’m angry to say the least,” said Trucks.

When asked if he was wrongly accused of something he didn’t do Trucks said, “I most certainly do. I don’t feel I can pass gas in my own yard without somebody signing a warrant.”

Trucks also claims he is not a racist.

“I got friends of color. A racist ain’t gonna hang out with people he hates,” said Trucks.

But the Bracketts say Trucks is a racist and they’re disappointed racism still exists today.

“You walk about and think it’s 2012 things have changed yeah, some things have but not everything,” said Brackett, “They don’t realize how they’re hurting people. They have feelings and I don’t understand how you could hurt a child – these are kids they’re threatening.”

Swastika, KKK Painted On Van
POSTED: 7:56 pm EDT August 15, 2010INDIANAPOLIS — Members of a southwest side church were shocked Sunday to find racist messages spray-painted on a van near their building. A swastika and “KKK” were scrawled across a van outside the Celestial Church of Christ at 3871 W. Farnsworth St., 6News’ Joanna Massee reported. Church leader Joseph Awobiyi said the church member who owns the van is out of town.Awobiyi, who is from Nigeria, said he and others of the 45-member congregation felt threatened by the message. “To my understanding, KKK doesn’t imply good meaning in relation to Christianity, which we represent. We represent Christ and this church,” he said. Some in the surrounding Mars Hill neighborhood said they were also upset by the graffiti. “These people do not bother nobody. This is uncalled for. They come out here to worship God,” Robin Slaten said. “We’re not living back in the old days. These people got just as much right here as we do, and they should be left alone.” “You are in Mars Hill,” said Lynn Rust. “You got a lot of young kids trying to be growner than what they are. They have no sense.” Awobiyi said his church has had minor problems with crime in the past, but nothing like the hateful graffiti. “Being a church of God, we don’t welcome such,” he said. “We kind of got baffled about it.” Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime and said it is an isolated occurrence.

Deputies said the letters “KKK,” along with ugly references, racial slurs and swastikas were scrawled across a home, a fence and several cars along Pine Street.
Vandals spray swastika, ‘KKK’ graffiti
Vandals painted a swastika and the letters “KKK” on a man’s truck in a series of graffiti crimes in a south-side Des Moines neighborhood overnight Thursday.Charles Punelli said a neighbor notified him of the vandalism to his vehicle Friday morning in the 2200 block of Courtland Avenue. The neighbor had found other symbols painted on her garage.“KKK” is short for Klu Klux Klan, a white supremacy group. The swastika was a symbol of Nazi Germany.
“I don’t know why they’d paint ‘KKK’ on my truck,” said Punelli, who hoped to use chemicals to scrub off the graffiti that afternoon.Police Sgt. Lori Lavorato said about a half-dozen vehicles were tagged with spray paint overnight. She said it will be difficult to determine who committed the crime.“Unless there’s a witness, there’s almost no way to figure out who did this,” she said. “If it was juveniles, it makes you wonder if they knew the severity of this, how disturbing it is.”
Punelli said about 30 or 40 youngsters were gathered at a nearby intersection on Thursday. He thinks some of them may be responsible for the vandalism.“I don’t know why they were there. I didn’t ask,” he said. “I didn’t want to get in the middle of whatever it was.”Lavorato said it’s possible the graffiti was a hate crime.
