Amos Kamil and Kevin T. Mulhearn visit The Context of White Supremacy. Mr. Kamil - a screenwriter, playwright and brand strategist – authored a monumental cover story for the New York Times Magazine on child sexual abuse at Horace Mann School. Mr. Mulhearn is the Founder and Managing Partner of Kevin T. Mulhearn, P.C.; additionally, he’s the co-founder and counsel of The White Tower Healing Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation which helps adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Our distinguished guests will discuss their respective investigations into long running allegations of sexual abuse against dozens – if not hundreds – of children. How were these vile acts allowed to continue? How is it that several of the suspected pedophiles were celebrated even after their suspected abuse was made public? We’ll ask Mr. Kamil and Attorney Mulhearn if these suspected child molesters deserve sympathy.

online support for Black / Afrikan sexual abuse survivors

The mission of the Black Sexual Abuse Survivors (BSAS) Web  site is to serve as an online support group for black, adult males and females  who were sexually abused as children.

BSAS is a non-professional,  not-for-profit resource, where its participants provide support to each other  online with their recovery from sexual abuse.

What is Sexual Abuse?
Sexual abuse is when a person (usually  an adult, but can be another child/teen)  forces or manipulates a child/teen into  sexual activity, or uses the child/teen for his/her sexual gratification. This can  include incest.

What is Incest?
Incest is sexual activity with a relative.
(Please note: Some individuals have expanded this definition to include non-blood-related, individuals who have a close relationship to the family or child/teen)

What are Sexual Abuse Survivors Recovering from?
They are recovering from being victims.

General Definitions
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): a psychological reaction occurring after experiencing a highly stressing event (i.e. wartime combat, physical violence, sexual abuse or a natural disaster) that is usually characterized by depression, anxiety, flashbacks, recurrent nightmares and avoidance of reminders of the event — abbreviation PTSD — called also post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Coping Mechanisms: The sum total of ways in which we deal with minor to major stress and trauma. Some of these processes are unconscious ones, others are learned behavior, and still others are skills we consciously master in order to reduce stress, or other intense emotions like depression.

Sexual Abuse Survivor: someone who has experienced sexual abuse but identifies his/herself as a survivor as opposed to a victim. A survivor has the desire to live and rebuild their life.

Perpetrator: A person who commits a sexual act against a child. This person can be a man, woman, child/teen. Despite a common myth, homosexual men are not more likely to sexually abuse children than heterosexual men are.

‘I could do anything with him that I wanted’: In his own chilling words, white male pedophile priest tells how he sexually abused 17 young boys

Disgraced: Former priest and convicted sex offender, Robert Van Handel, who was molested as a student at St Anthony's seminary school and then returned there as a priest where he molested boys in the choir

Robert Van Handel

The priest always started his favorite ‘game’ by having the young boy remove his underwear and put on loose-fitting shorts so he could fondle him more easily.

Then, the Rev. Robert Van Handel would run his hands up and down the child’s body as he stretched across his lap, Walkman headphones on his ears, pretending to be asleep.

The recollection appears in a 27-page ‘sexual history’ written by Van Handel, a defrocked Franciscan cleric who is accused of molesting at least 17 boys, including his own 5-year-old nephew, local children in his boys’ choir and students at the seminary boarding school where he taught.

Charged: Robert Van Handel walks into a courtroom in Santa Barbara, California on August 13 1994
Former priest and convicted sex offender, Robert Van Handel walks into a courtroom in Santa Barbara, California on August 13 1994

The essay, penned for a therapy assignment and kept secret for years, provides a shockingly candid and detailed window into the troubled mind of a notorious pedophile priest.

The narrative is believed to be the first of its kind to be publicly revealed through civil litigation despite years of lawsuits targeting sexually abusive priests.

Most confidential files unearthed in court cases only hint at the existence of sexual histories, which are a common part of therapy meant to be seen only by the priest and his psychologist, said attorney Jeffrey Anderson, who has handled more than 2,000 church abuse cases.

‘This is unique,’ Anderson said. ‘It really is a glimpse into the mind of the molester.’

Van Handel’s narrative came to light as part of a $28 million settlement between the Franciscans and 25 clergy abuse victims six years ago that also called for disclosure of the religious order’s internal files.

The accused priests fought unsuccessfully to keep their documents private in a battle that went all the way to the California Supreme Court.

The Associated Press obtained more than 4,000 pages, including Van Handel’s ‘sexual history’, from a plaintiff’s attorney last week.

Van Handel’s account, written between 1993 and 1994 during his treatment at Pacific Treatment Associates in Santa Cruz, is corroborated by letters, victim interviews and court papers from his file. A probation officer also cited the narrative in a sentencing report.

In the essay, Van Handel — who was himself molested by a priest at age 15 — traces his perilous descent from a sexually repressed pre-teen terrified of puberty to a serial pedophile who handpicked his victims from the members of a prestigious boys’ choir that he founded.

‘Once, or perhaps more than that, I took him up into the tower which was stark concrete with steel barred windows and he posed as a prisoner with few clothes on.’

Rev. Robert Van Handel

He seems mortified by his crimes but also entranced by them: He describes his “most beautiful” victim, a tanned and tow-headed child of seven, and talks about molesting a trio of brothers and taking nude pictures of the youngest sibling that were .quite artistic’.

‘Once, or perhaps more than that, I took him up into the tower which was stark concrete with steel barred windows and he posed as a prisoner with few clothes on.

‘I took some photos of him tied up with a big rope,’ Van Handel recalls of the 7-year-old. ‘It was as though I could do anything with him that I wanted.’

The priest would fondle his singers under the guise of tickling games or back rubs during one-on-one choir rehearsals. He had the boys play dart games that ended in sexually charged wrestling. He rubbed the genitals of high school seminary students in their dorms and photographed young boys in the shower on a choir trip to Europe.

Van Handel seems unaware of how serious his actions are and rarely expresses regret except to describe his paranoia when he thought he would be caught. Instead, he focuses on his own emotional needs in a rare moment of self-reflection.

‘There is something about me that is happier when accompanied by a small boy,’ he writes. ‘Perhaps besides the sexual element, the child in me wants a playmate.’

Van Handel, now 65, is a registered sex offender in Santa Cruz County. He did not return messages and his attorney, Robert ‘Skip’ Howie, said he would instruct him not to comment.

Howie said the disclosure of the private medical document will prevent the future identification and treatment of offenders. ‘You want the person to be open in the interview, but you totally destroy that avenue if you make these records public,’ he said. Seeing the document has been both painful and cathartic for those who recognize themselves in its pages. One victim said Van Handel’s memories match perfectly with his own, despite the priest’s vastly different perspective.

‘It is really validating to read — in his own words — that what we’ve been saying really did happen. We had spoken the truth,’ said the man, one of the brothers molested by Van Handel. He requested anonymity to protect his siblings, who are not ready to speak publicly.

The priest begins by describing a lonely childhood with an authoritarian father who moved the family five times before Van Handel turned seven. The family of seven finally settled in Orange County when Van Handel was 10.

At age 13, Van Handel’s father forced him to read a sex education book that terrified the young boy. He dreaded the onset of puberty, when he imagined sexual urges would be like ‘poison candy’, and prayed to remain a child.

The next year, he entered St. Anthony’s, the Franciscan junior seminary in Santa Barbara, to escape his father and his own sexual anxieties.

Instead, the young seminarian was molested by a priest as he lay in the infirmary. The priest told Van Handel that the molestation would draw out his fever by making him sweat.

‘While I don’t think it is of crucial importance in my life, it is curious that this is nearly the exact activity I would perform 10 to 15 years later,’ Van Handel writes.

‘I took some photos of him tied up with a big rope. It was as though I could do anything with him that I wanted.’

Rev. Robert Van Handel

It wasn’t until after high school, however, that Van Handel began to realize his sexual interests were abnormal. He discovered pornography near his college seminary and purchased magazines featuring naked children. He used a telephoto lens to take pictures of young children splashing in the campus fountain and bought photography books featuring nude boys.

‘I asked my best friend once if he saw anything ‘special’ in pictures of children and he said, “No, not at all”. I began to realize that I was different,’ he writes. ‘Sometimes I worried about this, but I thought that as long as it was just a fantasy, there was no reason to panic.’ It wasn’t long, however, before Van Handel’s fantasies became reality.

In 1970, he moved to Berkeley to pursue a master’s degree and started a boys’ choir for local children. There, he molested a boy of about seven, apparently his first victim. Around the same time, he molested his 5-year-old nephew.

Van Handel tried on two occasions to address his blossoming pedophilia by talking to a Franciscan counselor, but he was so vague that the man never understood. ‘I would hint, he would stab and we missed each other entirely,’ he wrote.

In 1975, Van Handel was ordained and was sent to St. Anthony’s, where he had been molested more than a decade before. The young priest hated the assignment and started another boys’ choir as a release — and was soon molesting its members.

He preferred boys between the ages of 8 and 11, he wrote, and their parents always dropped their children off as requested because they trusted the priest implicitly.

‘It was clearly my choir and the fulfillment of my fondest dreams,’ he writes. ‘Now I understand that it was also a constant supply of attractive little boys.’

Van Handel is detailed in his confessions, but seems oblivious to the damage he is doing. He recalls his surprise when one of his most frequent victims resisted him for the first time at age 11, after about four years of molestation.

‘He started to cry and that snapped something in my head. For the first time, I was seeing signs that he really did not like this,’ Van Handel writes.

In 1983, Van Handel saw an article about another boys’ choir director arrested for sex abuse. It threw him into a suicidal depression. ‘For the first time it was before me that what I had been doing could be classified as criminal behavior,’ he writes. ‘I imagined every boy’s parents read that article and decided to carefully question their sons about me.’

The priest revealed his sexual fantasies to a psychologist but ‘never gave him enough information to report me,’ he writes. In an attempt to reform, Van Handel dated three women, two of whom had children in his choir. He slept with one of the women twice and was terrified she would get pregnant.

‘I felt a whole new world was opening up for me, and for the most part I felt really good about the experience,’ Van Handel writes. ‘I felt that I was normal.’

Around the same time, Van Handel became rector of St. Anthony’s and was assigned to investigate another priest accused of sexual abuse. He was shocked when he realized the priest’s accusers — two brothers — were also victims of his.

In 1992, the parents of one of Van Handel’s victims wrote him a letter and copied in the Franciscan leadership. Within months, the priest was removed from the ministry. Two years later, Van Handel pleaded guilty to one count of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and sentenced to eight years in prison. There were at least 15 other cases too old to prosecute, according to a police report.

A psychiatrist evaluating him for sentencing once asked Van Handel about his worst fear. The priest’s answer was specific: The public release of his sexual history.

safest place for black men is in prison, says report that found they are half as likely to die while behind bars

Locked up: A report found that black men are half as likely to die at any given time if they're in prison than if they aren't

Black men are half as likely to die at any given time if they’re in prison than if they aren’t, suggests a new report.

A study looking at inmates in North Carolina found that black prisoners seemed to be especially protected against alcohol and drug-related deaths, as well as lethal accidents and certain chronic diseases.

But that pattern didn’t hold for white men, who on the whole were slightly more likely to die in prison than outside, according to findings published in Annals of Epidemiology.

Researchers say it’s not the first time a study has found lower death rates among certain groups of inmates – particularly disadvantaged people, who might get protection against violent injuries and murder.

‘Ironically, prisons are often the only provider of medical care accessible by these underserved and vulnerable Americans,’ said Hung-En Sung of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

‘Typically, prison-based care is more comprehensive than what inmates have received prior to their admission.’

The new study involved about 100,000 men between age 20 and 79 who were held in North Carolina prisons at some point between 1995 and 2005. Sixty per cent of those men were black.

Researchers linked prison and state health records to determine which of the inmates died, and of what causes, during their prison stay.

Then they compared those figures with expected deaths in men of the same age and race in the general population.

Less than one per cent of men died during incarceration, and there was no difference between black and white inmates. But outside prison walls, blacks have a higher rate of death at any given age than whites.

‘What’s very sad about this is that if we are able to all of a sudden equalise or diminish these health inequalities that you see by race inside a place like prison, it should also be that in places like a poor neighbourhood we should be able to diminish these sort of inequities,’ said Evelyn Patterson, who studies correctional facilities at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

‘If it can be done [in prison], then certainly it can happen outside of prison.’

As in the general population, cancer and heart and blood vessel diseases were the most common cause of death among inmates – accounting for more than half of deaths.

White prisoners died of cardiovascular diseases as often as expected and died of cancer slightly more often than non-prisoners.

Black inmates, by contrast, were between 30 and 40 per cent less likely to die of those causes than those who weren’t incarcerated.

Contrast: For white men, the overall death rate was slightly higher than in the general population

They were also less likely to die of diabetes, alcohol and drug-related causes, airway diseases, accidents, suicide and murder than black men not in prison.

All told, their risk of death at any age was only half that of men living in the community.

For white men, the overall death rate was slightly higher – by about 12 per cent – than in the general population, with some of that attributed to higher rates of death from infection, including HIV and hepatitis.

When the researchers broke prisoners up by age, death rates were only higher for white prisoners age 50 and older.

‘For some populations, being in prison likely provides benefits in regards to access to healthcare and life expectancy,’ said study author Dr David Rosen, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

But, he added: ‘It’s important to remember that there are many possible negative consequences of imprisonment – for example, broken relationships, loss of employment opportunities, and greater entrenchment in criminal activity — hat are not reflected in our study findings but nevertheless have an important influence on prisoners’ lives and their overall health.’

For Dr Rosen, one of the main messages from the study is the need to make the world outside of prison walls safer, and to make sure people living there have adequate access to healthcare.

white male doctor jailed for raping and sexually molesting patients

Doctor jailed for sexually molesting patients

A Swedish doctor has been jailed for molesting his female patients after 11 women reported him for his sexual advances during examinations.

The doctor, 41, was sentenced to two years in prison by Eskilstuna district court in central Sweden, after having reportedly touched women’s genitals and breasts inappropriately during examinations.

He also allegedly raped one woman, according to the Expressen newspaper.

The 41-year-old was arrested in January and held in custody for a month. It was during the subsequent investigation when more people came forward and reported the doctor for inappropriate touching during examinations.

The incidents occurred between 2008 and 2010 in four separate medical clinics around Sweden.

It is also alleged that the doctor forced some of the women to touch his own genitals and in several of the cases the victims have been disabled or elderly, according to Expressen.

Two of the women had been molested six times each before they sought justice.
The doctor denied all crimes, and stated in court that any touching of the women was accidental.

On Wednesday, the man was sentenced to two years in prison for sexual molestation and sentenced to pay the women damages, which range from 5,000 to 55,000 kronor ($720-$7,930).

His license to practice medicine has been revoked.

“The woman that I’ve spoken with felt that she has been vindicated in the court’s decision. I suppose the other women will feel similarly as time passes,” said Lucie H Skantz, one of the women’s lawyers, to Expressen.

white couple charged with child pornography and bestiality

Shawn Ingram and Dana Kintz

What started as a call to police claiming domestic abuse resulted in charges  that a man and his girlfriend sexually abused a dog, court records show.

Dana Kintz, 28, called police March 12 to the couple’s home in the 4000 block  of Russell Boulevard, alleging that Shawn Ingram, 37, had punched and slapped  her. Police said they found child pornography on Ingram’s cellphone and images  of Kintz engaged in sex acts with a dog.

Both were charged with unlawful sex with an animal, a misdemeanor. Ingram  also was charged with felony possession of child pornography.

Officials said there was sufficient evidence to charge Kintz as a willing  participant, although she claimed Ingram had coerced her behavior, and made her  wear a dog collar and mask.

Pictures showed Dana Kintz, 28, wearing a mask and dog collar while engaging in sexual acts with a dog

Pictures showed Dana Kintz, 28, wearing a mask and dog collar while engaging in sexual acts with a dog

Ingram denied it all to police, but officials said they found he had posted  pictures of the activities to animal fetish websites.

Ingram has served time in prison previously on a child porn conviction. He is  listed on Illinoissex offender database as living out of state but not shown  on Missouri’s list.

Kintz told a reporter she believes she was charged only because she refused  to cooperate with authorities on the child porn issue; she said someone else was  responsible for the pictures on Ingram’s phone.

She also said the dog at issue has since run away.

Ingram lawyer’s Douglas Forsyth, said, “I don’t have any comment about  anything.”

13 y/o white male murders his 37 y/o mother after attempting to rape her

Police continue to look for a possible motive in the shooting death of Gretchen Crooks, allegedly by her 13-year-old son Noah.

Police responding to the Crooks home, in Osage, Iowa, on Saturday night, found the woman shot  multiple times after her teenage son – the alleged shooter – called 911.

‘We’re at a loss. These are good people,’ sheriff Curt Younker said.

Noah Crooks, the 13-year-old boy who allegedly killed his mother

Police responding to the home of Gretchen Crooks of Osage, Iowa, found the woman shot multiple times just after 7:30pm, according to Mitchell County Sheriff's Office. Her son and alleged shooter made the call.

Killer: Noah Crooks, left, allegedly shot his mother Gretchen, right, multiple times in her Iowa home and then called police

There was no history of domestic abuse or criminal records associated with any Crooks family members.

The 13-year-old boy who allegedly  shot his 37-year-old mother dead with a hunting rifle is also facing  ‘unheard of’ charges that he tried to sexually abuse her.

Now, authorities are saying Noah  Crooks also tried to sexually abuse his mother, which mental health  professionals say they have never encountered among juveniles.

Charges filed today in Mitchell County District Court further accuse  Noah Crooks, an eighth-grader at Osage Middle School, of assault with  attempt to commit sexual abuse against his mother.

Shelia Aukes, a licensed social worker in Des Moines who works with young people on a variety of mental health issues told the DesMoines Register: ‘The victims in most sex offenses  committed by juveniles are siblings,  other juveniles or, more rare, other adults.

‘A child or adolescent  sexually abusing a parent is completely out of the norm, totally unheard of.’

Crooks is believed to have fired a .22 calibre at his mother on Saturday at their rural home and four days  later a motive has yet to be established.

The teen was said to be calm and emotionless when he called 911 reporting the shooting.

‘The emotions of the young man, from  what I’ve been told, is his demeanour was very calm and kind of stoic.  Almost like he was in shock also,’ Deputy Greg Beaver told KTTC.

He is currently being held at the North Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Waterloo and charges are expected to be filed today. He will be tried as a juvenile.

Iowa law allows children ages 14 and older to face crimes in adult court.

Mitchell County Sheriff Curt Younker told the DesMoines Register: ‘We’re at a loss. These are good people, very responsible. It is the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen.’

‘We have lost our daughter. We have lost our grandson,’ Mrs Crooks’ mother Beverly Brahm of Mason City told the  Albert Lea Tribune.

Mrs Crooks, who was listed with her husband William Crooks as the rural Osage property owners, had worked as a nurse at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa while also studying toward her master’s degree after accepted at the University of Iowa in 2009.

On her Facebook page back in 2010, she praised her son, one of two sons according to Mrs Brahm, for his musical talents on the saxophone as well as his accomplishment in being accepted into a University of Iowa camp to learn Chinese.

‘So proud of him!’ she wrote.

She had also recently published an application on her page reading: ‘Click “like” if you love your son!’

Mrs Crooks’ death comes as the first reported murder in the city of Osage since 1898, according to KAAL-TV.

The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office says their investigation is ongoing  with few further details in the killing reported such as where the  weapon came from.

William Crooks’ Facebook page shows his interest in the US Concealed Carry  association as well as the Springfield Armory, a company that sells  pistols and rifles.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office as well as the Iowa Division of  Criminal Investigation are continuing their investigation as well.

Her family expressed their great sadness by her death while her 35-year-old brother Jason thanked friends and family for their support.

‘I just want to extend my gratitude to family and friends for their support during this time,’ he told the WCF Courier.

Her co-workers at Mercy Medical also released a statement obtained by the Courier, reading:

‘Gretchen was a great nurse and leader. We, as members of her Mercy  family, continue to mourn for her and will be holding a memorial  service. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends.’

Speaking of her daughter with pride, Mrs Brahm, whom she relishes knowing she was able to say ‘I love you’ to earlier in the day of her passing, described the 37-year-old as studying ‘full time, while she was working full time,’ according to the Courier.

Wanting to make a difference wherever she could, Mrs Crooks previously served among a team of doctors and nurses who travelled to provide medical relief to the Hurricane Katrina and Rita victims in the Gulf in 2005.

Serving as a critical care nurse, she cared for patients in a makeshift hospital.

Her son, an eighth grader at Osage Middle School, the boy’s school’s superintendent told ABC 6 that they have since begun reaching out to the other students’ homes while also offering counseling.

‘It’s gut-wrenching, you know?’ Osage Superintendent Steve Bass told ABC. ‘It’s always tough in a small community when anyone dies for any reason but then you hear that a student is involved in any shape or form, it kind of goes to another level.’

Accused: Laura Thomas, 47, left, and Aubrey Thomas, 58, right has been accused of violently beating and sexually abusing their four adopted children.

A couple have been arrested for violently beating their four adopted children and forcing them to perform sex acts in a disturbing catalogue of abuse which police say amounts to torture.

Aubrey Thomas, 58, and his wife Laura, 47, have been accused of forcing the children to throw up and eat their own vomit, beating them with a large paddle called ‘Mr Awesome’ and then making them soak in a bath of ice to reduce swelling from the abuse.

Investigators described the family’s Oklahoma home, where the two girls and two boys now aged between 13 and 15 lived, as a ‘house of horrors’.

The children said they were sexually abused, claiming they were forced to eat gum off Aubrey Thomas’ penis and made to perform oral sex on their adoptive siblings in exchange for food.

The Thomas’ also allegedly forced them to put urine soaked underwear in their mouths if they wet the bed and forced them to eat horse manure for not cleaning a horse pen, reports News9.com.

The couple is facing a series of child abuse charges.

The couple, who lived in Rogers County, became foster parents in 2001 and took in six children.

In 2003, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services removed two of the children from their home after finding evidence of abuse, Osage County Undersheriff Lou Ann Brown told Tulsa World.

But the couple were able to keep the other four children and moved to Osage County west of Sperry in 2006.

In October, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office was called in to investigate after one of the girls, who had been put into a psychiatric facility, revealed the allegations to a counselor, reports the Tulsa World.

Investigators say the home schooled children, who were all found to be malnourished, were coached not to say anything about the alleged abuse.

Osage County sheriff’s investigator Justin Kling’s reports says the girls, particularly, were singled out for ‘heinous abuse’, reports the Tulsa World.

Kling was able to track down a biological daughter of the Thomas’ who had moved away in 2008. She echoed the stories of abuse.

‘It’s probably one of the worst cases that I know of that’s happened around here in a long time,’ Brown told News9.com.

‘To treat a child like that is beyond my imagination.’

The four children are now in protective custody.

The DHS released a statement to News9.com saying: ‘We are rigorously reviewing this case to find any mistakes made by our agency or others during the years of involvement with this family.

‘This is absolutely intolerable. It is our mission to protect children and we will take whatever corrective action is needed to ensure this does not happen in the future.’
